Hindu-Muslim? No! Humanity is supreme at calamity

http://news.indiainfo.com/2004/12/31/3112calamity.html

Porayar: Serving humanity is supreme at the time of calamities. This was witnessed at the graveyard of the famous Dargah at Nagore where bodies of people of different religion were buried.

It is reported that more than 250 bodies have been buried in Porayar, out of which 150 are Muslims. The remaining were bodies of Hindus and Christians.

Over 500 people have lost their lives in Nagore alone and more than 2000 people were rendered homeless. They were lodged at Nagore dargah. Among the 2000, most of the people are Hindus. They are being fed and taken care of by the Dargah administration and by the volunteers of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK), dargah sources said.

Mohammed Arif, a TMMK volunteer at Nagore said, "Religious feelings such as Hindus or Muslims doest not arise at all. Serving the humanity is supreme."

Similar help is being rendered at the Tranquebar Mosque. TMMK volunteers are actively carrying out relief measures all over the district.

Union Minister seeks Barnala''s intervention

New Delhi, Dec 30: Union Minister for Environment and Forests A Raja today sought the intervention of Tamil Nadu Governor S S Barnala so that immediate relief and rehabilitation measures are undertaken in the quake and tsunami-affected areas of the state.

In a letter to the Governor, the Minister, who is also a member of the Cabinet Committee on Disaster Management, said during his visit to the affected areas in Tamil Nadu, there was "neither relief measures to the affected people nor attempts to remove the decaying bodies by the state government."

"On the contrary, the bodies were being removed by TMMK volunteers and youths belonging to the NGOs with the help of a few political parties like the DMK," he said.

The worst part is that the state government has not come forward to provide hand gloves to the youths assisting in the operation and also not undertaken steps to administer antidotes to them, he added. (Agencies)
